Community

Designs that reflect the needs, constitution and desires of a community

The design of public space carries with it the responsibility of creating an experience that is reflective of a diverse population and accessible by the community at large, while standing as a symbol fo the held beliefs and imagery of a mixed generation.

Yet, as society evolves, so too does the way in which we use our public spaces.

Libraries. Once solely for research and reading, libraries have become more social places, requiring special consideration for previously standard quiet reading space. This once simple space now houses teaching seminars, technology labs, art galleries and community programs for the exchange of community ideas.

Similarly, community centers are creating more intergenerational programs for shared experiences, activity and learning. Instead of separate teen and senior centers, simple gymnasiums and community education spaces, centers are being created that intermix generations to provide for a more complete social experience. Instead of offering simple activity and gathering space, new community centers are offering continued learning, entertainment and explosure to alternative generations, cultures and groups.

This level of complexity reflects a vibrant culture and community. Accordingly, each project challenges the architect to be creative, yet mindful of the longevity and fiscal responsibility demanded by public architecture.
