WAI Continuum Design Recognized in National Architectural Showcase
Project: Repositioning Walker Methodist Alzheimer's Unit
Walker Methodist Care Center’s repositioning project, designed by WAI Continuum, is featured in DESIGN for Senior Environments 2005.
This architectural showcase is sponsored by Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments (SAGE) and Nursing Homes/Long Term Care Management. Distributed in mid April, it recognizes architectural projects that have achieved exceptionally innovative design solutions for aging environments.
This award acknowledges WAI Continuum’s design for its success in repositioning the facility’s medical model towards a resident centered environment, wherein residents participate in their own care delivery. The annual publication further reviews the success of this project in an article called “Obstacles and Solutions in Real-World Design”.
In the end, it is the voice of the client that truly shows the success of the design.
“While it was expected during the planning and renovation process that the new environment would create a visibly pleasing fresh space, the impact of the design on residential quality of life far surpassed our expectations. We have learned very clearly how significantly environment impacts quality of life and, in turn, quality of care. We had a good program prior to renovation, but post renovation, we have a GREAT program.” - Jonathan Lundberg, Chief Operations Officer of Walker Methodist.
